Are You Guilty Of These Dental Mistakes?

Latest News

We all know that nobody is perfect, we all make mistakes. We do however believe that with the correct knowledge, our mistakes can easily be replaced with good oral habits. Many might not even know that these dental practices are mistakes? So here goes…

We only want the best for our patients and truly care about their oral health as we believe that your oral health is the gateway to your overall health. Having poor oral health could result in a ripple effect, causing other health issues that you’d rather avoid all together.

Mistake 1: Skipping regular dental visits every 6 months for a consultation and dental clean.

The purpose of regular dental consultations and dental cleans every 6 months is to ensure that you achieve optimal oral health and to identify any dental issues that you may have. Identifying dental issues early enough can prevent you from having to spend an abundance of money in the future to rectify what would have become a dental problem and health risk.

Regular dental cleans every month remove any stubborn plaque build-up and assists with decreasing the existence or worsening of stains on your teeth. Furthermore, this prevents gum disease and bad breath all together.

Mistake 2: Only visiting the dentist when you experience toothache.

This mistake goes hand in hand with the first point. Do not just wait for toothache, a chipped tooth or discoloration of teeth to visit the dentist. Make sure that you keep up with regular dental appointments and cleans every six months to avoid unexpected dental problems in the future.

Mistake 3: Forgetting to replace your toothbrush every 3 months.

It is recommended that you replace your toothbrush or electric toothbrush heads every 3 months. This is especially important if you’ve recently had any form of contagious infection, flu or mouth sores. By doing this you are avoiding the spread of those infectious germs and bacteria. Even if you have been healthy, ensuring you change your toothbrush every 3 months prevents you from using a toothbrush with bacteria build-up as well as those which have frayed bristles and are no longer effective anymore.

We suggest buying Bamboo toothbrushes when you change yours every 3 months to prevent further plastic pollution. Bamboo toothbrushes are fully biodegradable and therefore do not cause harm to the environment in contrast to plastic toothbrushes.

Mistake 4: Forgetting to floss every day.

Regular flossing once a day is a great way of preventing bacteria and ultimately prevents cavities and gum disease.

Neglecting a favourable flossing routine could result in food being trapped between your teeth which is essentially converted into bacteria. The bacteria may eventually start to decay the enamel of your teeth resulting in cavities. If cavities are left untreated, loss of teeth could occur.

We highly recommend Queen of Clean dental tape and Man Floss Super wide, wafer thin, minty & delicate on your gums. Uniquely refillable, absorbent, and tough dental floss.

Mistake 5: Storing your toothbrush close to others or not in a bathroom cupboard.

The way you store your toothbrush is so important! We strongly advise that you do not to store your toothbrush too close to others as toothbrushes are full of bacteria and having yours close to another may result in the spread of bacteria from one toothbrush to another. This could result in the risk of infections.

Furthermore, toothbrushes that are kept in the bathroom should be stored in the cupboards or a toothbrush cap placed on it to prevent all the bathroom germs from coming into contact with your toothbrush.

A hygienic toothbrush results in a hygienic mouth and optimal oral hygiene.

Mistake 6: Forgetting to brush your tongue.

Not many people may know this but brushing your tongue is just as important as brushing your teeth! Bacteria and plaque can build-up on your tongue which if left can cause bad breath, gum disease or tooth decay. Brushing your tongue every time you brush your teeth can assist you with achieving optimal oral hygiene by removing bacteria and plaque. Buy your very own tongue brush for an effective clean

Prevention is better than cure! Take care of your oral health and you may prevent any future dental problems. It is never too late to improve your oral health routine!
