Looking after your teeth is the best medical aid insurance you can give yourself
The best thing you can do for your pocket though is to care for your teeth as best you can at home. Follow the guidelines as set out by the South African Dental Association (SADA):
- Brush your teeth twice a day, and floss once a day. Use a mouthwash in addition if you can.
- Aim to replace your toothbrush every three months.
- Brush your teeth or tongue as well – many bacterial elements hide here and a fresh tongue also contributes to fresher breath for longer.
- Minimise sugar, acid foods and sticky foods in your diet as much as possible.
- Try to cut back on snacking – saliva is produced every time you eat but it may not be enough to wash back food residue, which then accumulate on and in between your teeth and below the gumline.
- Ask your dentist about flouride supplements you could give to your kids under 12.
- Use flouride-based dental products.
- Brush your gums as well as the inside of your teeth. Ensure that you do not brush too hard though – excessive brushing could lead to your gums bleeding.
In addition, remember to eat a balanced diet. This controls the level of alkalinity in your body, and helps make sure you don’t develop digestive issues. It also strengthens immunity, which makes your gum and mouth area stronger, and resilient to irritating tongue cuts or canker sores.
